The prestige of New Orleans is perfect for a small town. Its music, cuisine, history, and culture are recognised all over the world — so most travellers have an understanding of the place before they ever arrive. This is a city that has been marinated in its own rituals for decades, with French, Spanish, African and American elements both visible in the structure of daily life here. It feels like a sovereign republic that has endured decay and catastrophe with a decadent strength that has come to characterise it.
The National WWII Museum: You wouldn't have to be a fan of history to appreciate the National Museum of the Second World War, according to recent visitors. The museum, which opened on 6 June 2000 (the 56th anniversary of D-Day), houses an impressive collection of exhibits and instructional films covering all facets of the war, from D-Day to the Pacific War to the Holocaust. Stephen Ambrose's brainchild – the best-selling author and adviser for the film "Saving Private Ryan" – also includes an oral account of the perspectives of civilians and soldiers in the early 1940s. The museum provides a unique educational experience, while recent visitors have warned that some of the exhibits might be too unsettling for children.
Garden District: Have a guided tour of the Garden District (located a little less than three miles southwest of the French Quarter) to see some of the most stunning homes in the area. As its name suggests, this old suburban community is full of trees, ivy, and indeed, gardens. Visitors are delighted by the stunning houses and architecture. Some also favoured the Garden District over Bourbon Street, citing the quiet environment and well-preserved assets as a much-needed escape from the busy tourist spots of the area.
French Quarter: If you'd like to explore New Orleans fully, it's best to launch your tour here. Latest tourists said the spot is lively, with ample to do and witness and a one-of-a-kind occurrence to share. The spot, also famous as Vieux Carré, is the spirit and soul of this town and it is a national historical location. When cycling, pay attention to the architecture of the neighbourhood: the balconies are adorned with baroque ironworks and hanging trees, while the leafy courtyards are packed with bubbling fountains. The scene is certainly charming, but it can also be pricey if you want to stay at either of the hotels in the French Quarter.
Early in the spring if you want to visit Mardi gras, later if you prefer the Jazz Fest, but the climate is at its most friendly. It's followed quickly by the autumn; when the days of picnics and the park are always fun. Winters are warm and brief, but rainy summers can be oppressive and the city silent.
